Once upon a time we looked on art as devotional labour -- a kind of harsh mistress who had to be served. While art remains our chosen vocation, we lately see it as a set of communication technologies, fancy telephones, if you will. That's not to say that it's just another piece of man-made junk. Communication is crucial to the well being of individuals and cultures. Contemporary visual art, with all its problematics and decentralized practice, remains a vital site for the discussion of our most important thoughts and values, connecting us with others. It is a quintessentially human thing to do and at its best, art should serve us all.
